Founded in 1994 by Christian von Koenigsegg, Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a Swedish high-performance car manufacturer based in Ängelholm that has consistently pushed the boundaries of automotive engineering. Operating out of a former Swedish Air Force base, the company maintains a small but highly specialised team of approximately 800 employees who hand-craft nearly every component in-house, from engines and transmissions to carbon fibre chassis. Koenigsegg's history is defined by extreme exclusivity and record-breaking performance; their first production car, the CC8S, was followed by models like the CCR, CCX, and the Agera RS, the latter of which set a world production car speed record of 277.87 mph in 2017. The brand is renowned for proprietary innovations, such as the Dihedral Synchro-helix doors that open outwards and upwards, the Triplex suspension system, and the Light Speed Transmission (LST). Their current lineup includes the Jesko, designed for ultimate speed and track performance, and the Gemera, a four-seat "Mega-GT" featuring an 800-volt hybrid system and a camless "Tiny Friendly Giant" (TFG) engine. With total production across its entire history estimated at around 250 to 300 vehicles, Koenigsegg remains one of the rarest and most technologically advanced automotive marques in the world.
Foundational History
Young Founder: Christian von Koenigsegg founded the company in 1994 at just 22 years old, driven by a childhood dream of building a world-class supercar.
Movie Inspiration: The idea for the company was inspired by a Norwegian stop-motion film, The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix, about a bicycle repairman who builds a race car.
The Ghost Symbol: Every car features a "Ghost" badge as a tribute to the Swedish Air Force's "Ghost Squadron" that formerly occupied their current factory site.
Aviation Base: Since 2003, Koenigsegg has operated out of a converted former military airbase in Ängelholm, Sweden, utilizing the runway for high-speed testing.
Small Production Scale: Production remains incredibly limited; the company typically produces fewer than 50 cars per year, ensuring extreme rarity for collectors.
Engineering & Performance
Dihedral Synchro-Helix Doors: Their signature door system opens outwards and swivels upwards in a unique motion designed to clear high curbs while looking dramatic.
The "Megacar": In 2014, the One:1 became the world's first "megacar," so named because it produced exactly one megawatt of power (1,341 hp).
1:1 Power-to-Weight Ratio: The One:1 was also the first production car to achieve a perfect 1:1 ratio, weighing exactly 1,360 kg with 1,360 hp.
Light Speed Transmission (LST): Featured in the Jesko, this 9-speed gearbox uses seven clutches to allow for "near-telepathic" shifts between any gears almost instantly.
Direct Drive System: Introduced in the Regera, this innovation removes the traditional gearbox entirely, connecting the engine directly to the rear axle for reduced weight and power loss.
Freevalve Technology: Koenigsegg pioneered camless engine technology, which uses independent actuators to control valves for better fuel efficiency and performance.
Triplex Suspension: This system uses a third damper in the rear to provide an anti-squat element, improving traction and stability during extreme acceleration.
Hollow Carbon Fiber Wheels: Koenigsegg was the first to develop "Aircore" wheels, which are completely hollow and made entirely of carbon fiber to reduce unsprung weight.
Speed Records & Innovation
World Speed Records: The Agera RS set a world production car speed record of 277.87 mph in 2017.
0–400–0 km/h Supremacy: Koenigsegg has repeatedly broken this record, with the Regera most recently completing the sprint to 400 km/h and back to a stop in just 28.81 seconds.
In-House Manufacturing: Unusually for a small manufacturer, Koenigsegg develops almost everything in-house, down to their own titanium nuts and bolts.
Biofuel Pioneers: The CCXR was the world's first "green" supercar, designed to run on E85 biofuel, which actually increased its output to over 1,000 hp.
The "Tiny Friendly Giant" (TFG): Their Gemera model uses a small but mighty 2.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine that produces a staggering 600 hp on its own.
Luxury & Design
Autoskin: A fully robotized system that allows all doors and hoods to open and close automatically at the touch of a button.
Four-Seat Hypercar: The Gemera redefined the brand by offering the world’s first "Mega-GT," providing enough room and luggage space for four adults while maintaining hypercar performance.
